Decarbonisation

At Etex, we are determined to progress towards carbon neutrality. We manufacture products and solutions that reduces our customers' footprint as well as our own. In 2022 we set the course for further reduction of our energy consumption and a shift in energy sources and technologies on a global scale. As a result, we reduced our greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity based on the same scope as in 2021. In the meantime, green electricity represents more than 74% of our total consumption.

Our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

The absolute energy consumption and the carbon intensity increased in 2022, due to our new portfolio of energy-intensive but also lightweight insulation products. However, our scope 1 emissions have decreased compared to 2021, from 836,049 to 832,491. Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions that Etex owns or controls.

Most of our CO₂  emissions (70.4%) are scope 3 emissions, coming from sources and activities indirectly related to Etex activities.

Our 2022 energy figures

We are choosing greener energy, with 74% of 2022 electricity from green sources. Our target is to secure 100% certified renewable power by 2030.

How do we reach our goals?

In 2021 we set the course for further reduction of our energy consumption and a shift in energy sources and technologies on a global scale. As a result, we reduced our greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity based on the same scope as in 2020. With our first phase ambition of a 35% reduction of the joint scopes 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emission intensity by 2030 (vs a 2018 baseline), we successfully used the year to advance on our group-wide decarbonisation roadmap.

Given that CO₂ reduction opportunities exist along the entire value chain we started a first evaluation of scope 3 emissions which represent around 70% of our total emissions (indirect emissions). The main drivers in scope 3 are the use of cement in our fibre cement activities, up-stream emissions from fuel and energy related activities, the use of gypsum and paper in our plasterboard activities and the inbound and outbound transport of raw materials and finish products for all activities.
